Midweek Motivation | How to stay sane during exams

Whether you’re at school, college or university, it’s almost a guaranteed that you are no stranger to exams. Unfortunately, these pesky little things seem to fall when the weather is seriously improving and all you want to do is tan whilst sipping on a pina colada.

Unfortunately, trying to achieve a tan through the window from behind our desk is more the reality most of us are facing. So, if you’re seriously lacking in motivation or just taking procrastination to a whole new level, you have come to the right place.

Here’s some tips on how to survive the dreaded exam season without losing your mind in the process…

1. Stay hydrated

Treat exams as if you are running a marathon. Except instead of using your legs, you are using your brain. Can marathon runners run 26 miles without a sip of water? Then how do you expect your brain to run for days on end without a little bit of good old hydration?

All the water

2. Make revision fun

Yes, believe it or not, this is actually possible. Whether recording your notes to the theme tune of Fresh Prince of Bel Air will help you remember them – or releasing your inner Picasso is more your thing – find ways to spice up your revision so it’s not just an endless cycle of reading notes and banging your head against a wall.

Try not to get too carried away though…

3. Get outside

Above all, it is most important to take regular breaks during the revision period so your brain has time to process information. It’s also important not to neglect your overall wellbeing. One of the best ways to do this is to go for a run, cycle or brisk walk to get your heart rate pumping and get away from the desk.

Find your local park or running route!

4. Don’t panic

The more time you spend working yourself into a panic about how much revision you haven’t yet done, the less you actually do. Pretty self explanatory really.

Don’t be this person…

5. Think of the result

Sometimes, it’s hard to stay motivated. When the dreaded ‘I just wan’t to give up why did I choose to study this degree akshdhfkflgl’ mentality sets in, there’s only one thing that will truly help. Perspective. First, visualise yourself opening your results and getting exactly what you want. Now, visualise yourself failing. I’m sure I know which position you’d rather be in come results day.

We all want to be this kid

…And there you have it. Hope this helped, now stop procrastinating and study. Good luck!
